TREATED PINE TIMBER
Framing: structural building applications such a beams, bearers, and floor joists in pole frame constructions not fully protected by roof overhanging or cladding, and external posts, with no ground contact. | H3-F7 |
Roof Members: Roof beams and rafters where roofing is omitted to form a pergola | H3-F7 |
Railings and Stairs: Handrails, balusters, newel posts and in-fill to weather exposed verandahs, decks, landings and stairs. Also weather exposed steps treads, stringers, etc. | H3-F7 |
Posts & retaining: Pergola posts, decking posts, bearers in close ground contact, all timber with low hazard ground contact. | H4-F7 H4 – logs & sleepers. |
H1 | Above ground use only. Protected from weather. | Borers. | Not applicable for pine. |
H2 | Above ground use only. Protected from weather. | Borers, termites. | Framing and flooring. |
H3 | Above ground use only. Exposed to weather. | Moderate decay. Borers, termites. | Exterior joinery, fascia, decking, pergolas, fence rails, palings, pickets, cladding. |
H4 | In-ground contact. | Severe decay. Borers, termites. | Fence posts, agricultural uses, verandah posts, landscaping. |
H5 | In-ground contact. | Very severe decay. Borers, termites. | Load bearing poles, piles, culverts, cooling towers. |
H6 | Marine use. Constantly wet. | Marine Borer and decay. | Slipways, wharf supports. |
F7 – WHAT IS IT?
F7 (class 2) is a strength rating for timber. Australian building codes require an F7 strength rating for any timber species used in certain load bearing situations such as bearers and joists. A length of timber marked F7 indicates it has a basic working stress in bending of about 7 mega pascals (MPa). The higher the stress rating the greater the strength.
SEASONING – KILN DRIED – WHAT IS IT?
Seasoning is the term used for timber which has had its moisture content reduced by either kiln or air drying. Moisture control quantity is expressed in percentages et. 12% moisture content. Unseasoned and green timber is likely to shrink or suffer distortion (warping, bowing) after installation.
CAN I DEPEND ON TREATED PINE?
The treatment process and the chemicals used are proven and reliable formulas supported by a vast amount of scientific knowledge, research and experience.
The treatment process fixes the chemical to the cell walls of the timber making the product safe to handle. It is only when destroyed by burning that the chemical can be released as potentially toxic fumes. This risk is not too dissimilar to that represented by other chemically constituted products such as ordinary household plastics.
